Here's some of the preproduction work for a university project back in October 2012.
Each classmate was given 3 words/sentences at random; one was for the art style; another was for the location; another described the genre of the animation; and the last one was to describe the character or a feature of the character, and were then told to make two animated shots based on the words we were given.
For me I got...
Art Style: Tomi Ungerer
Location: Coach (train or bus)
Genre: Detective Movie
Character: Spice
I was already a fan of Tomi's work so I had no trouble researching his animation and art and finding things I liked about his style.
4 posters of 4 of his animated cartoons
Drawings based on Tomi's political and personal work, as well as from his animations.
After my research it was time to start designing the world, story and characters of my animation.
Here are some of the concept pieces from characters, location and title cards.
Like all of his cartoons, they all set in various time periods away from the modern age.
In the case of my cartoon in his style, I decided to opt for a 40/50's look, the age most people would say is synonymous with crime/detective movies.
Concepts for the main character/detective
Concepts for the villain.
Final model sheet for the villain
Final model sheet for the antagonist.
Some out-of-style movie posters.
